Citizenship of India

Eligibility for OCI Card: Persons of Indian origin who have migrated from India to acquire a citizenship of a foreign country (other than Pakistan & Bangladesh) are eligible for OCI card as long as their home countries allow dual citizenship. A foreign national, who was eligible to become citizen of India on 26th January 1950, was a citizen of India on or at any time after 26th January 1950, belonged to a territory that become part of India after 15th August 1947 and his/her’s children and grand children are eligible for OCI Card.

Benefits available to a OCI Card holder: A multiple entry, multi-purpose life-long visa to visit India; exemption from registration with FRRO for any length of stay in India; parity with Non-resident Indians in respect of economic, financial and educational fields except in relation to acquisition of agricultural and plantation properties; OCI card holder is eligible to apply for grant of Indian citizenship under section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Ac 1955 if he/she is registered as OCI for five years and has been residing in India for one year out of the five years before making the application.

Validity of OCI Card: Life long visa, OCI card to be carried along with a valid Passport with OCI visa sticker on it. The fee for OCI Card is Euro 235.

NOTE: OCI Card does not entitle the cardholder to undertake any missionary work, mountaineering or research work, without prior permission of the Government of India.



PIO Cards

Government of India for the convenience of persons of Indian origin has launched the PIO Card Scheme, aimed at making the journey back to the roots, simpler, easier, flexible and trouble free.

Eligibility for PIO Card: A person who at any time held an Indian passport; or he/she or either of his/her parents or grandparents or great parents was born in and permanently resident in India; or who is a spouse of citizen of India or a person of Indian origin is eligible for a PIO Card.

Benefits available to a PIO Card holder: No visa required for visiting India during the validity of PIO Card; Exemption of requirement of registration with FRRO if period of stay in India does not exceed six months; parity with non-resident Indians in respect of facilities available to the latter in economic, financial and educational fields; all facilities in matter of acquisition, holding, transfer and disposal of immovable properties in India except relating to acquisition of agricultural/plantation properties; facilities available to children of NRIs for getting admission to educational institutions in India; facilities available under various housing schemes of LIC, State Government and other Govt. Agencies.

Validity of PIO Card: Validity of PIO Card is 15 years subject to validity of the passport. The PIO Card will be valid only when accompanied with a valid passport. The fee for PIO Card is Euro 300(Euro 150 for minors).
